JUST – Episoden in der Calwer Passage

Im Mai und Juni wird die Calwer Passage im Zentrum
Stuttgarts zum Spielort kontemporären Kunstgeschehens. Die Kuratoren, Laura
Bernhardt, Demian Bern und ihr Team, laden in die leerstehenden Boutiquen
dieses postmodernen Kleinods Künstler unterschiedlicher Disziplinen,
Stuttgarter Kunstinstitutionen und weitere Kooperationspartner zu sogenannten
»Raumstipendien« ein. Sechs Projektwochen lang greifen Ausstellungen,
Workshops, Vorträge und hybride Formate ineinander. JUST spannt den Bogen für
prozessuale Arbeitsweisen, Installationen, Performances, Interventionen und
institutionelle Schnittstellen. Die Episode als Handlungsformat öffnet
Passanten, Besuchern und Kooperationspartnern Zugänge zu künstlerischen
Positionen und bietet sowohl Plattformen als auch Reibungsflächen zwischen den
Akteuren. In den vom Eigentümer zur Verfügung gestellten Räumlichkeiten sollen
nicht ausschließlich ästhetische Äußerungen erzeugt und diskutiert werden. Die
besonderen Konstellationen geben auch Forderungen Ausdruck nach einem direkten
Zusammenwirken, mutigen Initiativen und der Bereitschaft zur aktiven
Auseinandersetzung – für die Kunst und für die Stadt.
Im wöchentlichen Wechsel verwandeln künstlerische Positionen
die acht Ladenflächen in Stätten der Produktion und des Austauschs. Jede
Projektwoche beginnt freitags mit einer Vernissage und endet am darauffolgenden
Donnerstag mit einer Finissage. Punktuell gliedern sich Seminare, Workshops,
Kunstvermittlungen und Vorträge in die künstlerischen Episoden ein. Sie
thematisieren u.a. Existenzfragen des Künstlers und den Stellenwert von Kultur
im urbanen Raum und schaffen damit ein offenes Diskursfeld, das die Bezüge von
Kunst und Gesellschaft aktiv zu verorten sucht. Auch in den räumlich parallel
stattfindenden Episoden werden die Künstlerinnen und Künstler solche Themen
bearbeiten und mit einem Publikum verhandeln. Erst zum Ende der sechs Wochen
jedoch wird sich ein Gesamtbild ausmachen lassen, das sich in mannigfaltigen
Verknüpfungen und neuen Konstellationen manifestiert und der Zukunft und sich
selbst neue Aufgaben stellt.

In May and June the Calwer
Passage in Stuttgart's city center becomes a setting for artistic happenings.
Curators Laura Bernhardt and Demian Bern and their team invite artists from a
variety of disciplines, along with Stuttgart's art institutions and other
partners for so-called “space scholarships” within vacant post-modern
boutiques. This six-week project intertwines exhibitions, workshops, lectures
and hybrid formats. JUST extends its reach to include process-based working
methods, installation, performance, interventions and institutional interfaces.
The “episode”, as an acting format, makes artistic positions accessible to
passerby, visitors and cooperation-partners while offering platforms and points
of contact between the players. On these premises, made available by the owner,
the dialogue should extend beyond the production and discussion of mere
aesthetic utterances. This special constellation expresses a demand for direct
interaction, bold initiatives and a readiness to actively debate for art and
for the city.
The weekly rotation of artistic
positions will transform the eight shop areas into spaces of production and
exchange. Each project week begins on Friday with an opening reception and ends
the following Thursday with a closing event. Regularly scheduled seminars,
workshops, artistic exchanges and lectures will be incorporated into the
artistic episodes. These will focus on, among other things, existential
questions of the artist and the significance of culture in urban space, thus
creating an open field of discourse that seeks to actively situate the
relations of art and society. The artists will also respond to such themes by
negotiating with the public within the spatial context of these concurrently
held episodes. From the beginning to the end of the six weeks, an overall
picture will develop, manifesting through relationships and constellations. The
future will present us with new objectives.
